Dining Services Safety
The following materials are provided for UCR Restaurant and Dining employee with explanations and suggestions on how best to include them into health and safety programs. A short explanation for some of these items is included below:
Restaurant Safety Training Guide
This short training program is designed to help you work together with your staff to design a creative, simple health and safety plan for your restaurant. Involving your staff in identifying potential problems is an effective way to get employee buy-in regarding the importance of health and safety. This training can also help you meet some of the requirements of Cal/OSHA’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program standard. In addition to training, part of your plan should be regular safety meetings to discuss the hazards in your restaurant and generate ideas for correcting them.
Safety Orientation Checklist
This form can be used for new employees but also for periodic review for current employees or whenever a new procedure or process is initiated.
Safety Steps for Supervisors and Employees in Restaurants
A useful summary of the responsibilities both employers and employees share for a safe workplace. This can be shared with new employees during their initial orientation.
"Recipes for Safety Success"
The following items are best used during new-employee orientation and as review during crew safety meetings as 15 minute "In-Service" interactive discussion, training session talking points.

Model Shoe Policy
Slips and falls are a major contributor to injuries in restaurants and are No. 1 for workers' compensation costs. As part of the best practices listed above for reducing these injuries, EH&S recommend that all UCR Restaurants and Dining Services adopt a Model Shoe Policy. These specific elements are not required by Cal-OSHA; however, if other methods are not successful in reducing such injuries, employers may be required to establish such a policy as part of their IIPP.
