Indoor Air Quality

The term Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) refers to the environmental characteristics of the air inside the buildings in which we work and live.

IAQ problems occur because of many factors, including ventilation systems and occasional odors or environmental room conditions that cause consistent discomfort or health issues. Buildings have become more closed off from the environment and rely more heavily on their ventilation system with California's abiding energy consumption concerns.

The purpose of this program is to establish a uniform set of guidelines for maintaining indoor air of adequate quality in all campus buildings. Through the collaborative efforts of EH&S, Facilities Management and individual departments, indoor air quality is maintained through reasonable preventive and responsive measures.

Preventive approaches include periodic inspections, preventive maintenance and project plan reviews. Responsive approaches consist of a mechanism for reporting complaints, follow-up investigation and assessment and implementation of corrective actions.

EH&S provides technical assistance in evaluating and mitigating indoor air quality (IAQ) problems on the campus. EH&S can perform inspections and/or air monitoring to help confirm the presence and determine the cause of an IAQ issue. EH&S specialists meet regularly with representatives of Physical Plant-Campus Services; Planning, Design & Construction; and University Health Services to provide comprehensive solutions to IAQ problems.
